The project is a new home on a waterfront lot in Virginia’s middle peninsula with an existing cottage. The clients requested a new one level structure with a small footprint as they transition from a weekend destination to a full-time retirement home. The cottage that is now on site will become a guest house for their children and weekend visitors.
The house programs are organized into two main bars with a deep garage at the rear for boat storage. The two main bars have long views of the river to the south. The living room is situated in an area between the bars with a lookout room and an exterior deck above. The roof form and its folds reduce the building height at the perimeter and maximize height at the south end in order to frame the views of the water. A small courtyard space in the center of the house provides daylight and cross ventilation for the public spaces, a guest bedroom, as well as a home office.
